GIMMER NICHOLSON

Christopher Idylls by Gimmer Nicholson is an extremely beautiful album which is quite difficult to categorize. The reason for this is that it is unique; while this masterpiece lends itself to several well-known genres, including folk, classical, and new age, it cannot be neatly placed into any category.

Christopher Idylls is a collection of six beautiful songs, composed and performed by Gimmer Nicholson. Gimmer Nicholson, while living in the San Francisco area in 1968, performed folk and blues music with many of the artists in that area. He also, through his family roots in the Mid-South, often performed in and about Memphis with many of the renowned blues musicians there. While in San Francisco, he composed several melodies, recorded them on a home recorder as a “demo,” and sent them to his brother in Memphis. They were then taken to Terry Manning, producer and engineer, who was working at that time out of Ardent Recording Studios in Memphis. The songs were brought into Manning’s office in a brown paper sack, on a 5” reel-to-reel tape. When Manning heard the songs, however, as he says, “an enchantment set in...that has not subsided for a day since that time.” He immediately set about recording these beautiful melodies. So, back in 1968, Nicholson and Manning entered Ardent Studios and recorded the songs now included on Christopher Idylls.

Gimmer Nicholson performed on acoustic and electric guitars, yet, contrary to the traditional folk music ways, also utilized multi-tracking techniques, backwards recording, synchronized repeats, and outboard effects. All of this combined to create a beautiful, homogeneous sound, which defies exact description, and rebels against the boundaries of several musical categories. These songs can be viewed in the way of Indian music ragas...some for morning, some for evening, inspired by contemplative periods of the soul, etc… yet they are not in any way Indian. They can be listened to in the same way that Bach’s compositions for his children are enjoyed just as beautiful songs, not merely instructive pieces or exercises.

Christopher Idylls is highly reminiscent of New Age music, which, of course, was yet to be born when this album was recorded! It is moody and reflective, yet dynamic and positive. While this album was pressed onto vinyl disc in limited numbers in the 70’s, this is the first full-scale release of these compositions. This is an album that just must be listened to...after a time or two, it often doesn’t leave the “turntable” for quite a while. Additionally, the album artwork features two photographs by William Eggleston, regarded in many circles as the best color photographer ever. Eggleston’s photographs have appeared in many museums, most notably the Museum of Modern Art, and in numerous books. (Nicholson, Eggleston and Manning are friends of many years.)
